Stroud author carves out global win with steak cookbook
Stroud author Joan Tuaño Rumsey has won “Best Meat Book” at the 31st Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for her debut cookbook Steak Simplified. Often called the Oscars of food publishing, the global award celebrates the best food and drink titles from more than 200 countries.
Now based in Stroud, Joan brings her Filipino family’s multi-generation butchery heritage into a modern, accessible guide that helps home cooks choose, understand, and cook steak with confidence. Steak Simplified has gained international attention for its clear explanations, practical techniques, and celebration of quality ingredients — shaped by Joan’s experiences across the Philippines, the UAE, and the UK.
Stroud’s reputation as a creative hub continues to grow, and Joan’s award adds to the town’s vibrant community of writers, makers, and food innovators. “Stroud has such a supportive and inspiring creative community,” she says. “It’s an honour to bring this award home.”
Steak Simplified covers everything from selecting cuts and understanding marbling to trimming, seasoning, and cooking steak perfectly — making it ideal for beginners and seasoned home cooks alike.
The book is available locally at Knight’s Butchers (Stroud) and Jesse Smith (Tetbury/Upton), and online via Amazon, Meze Publishing, Waterstones, Blackwell’s, and other select retailers.
